The challenge
Environmental monitoring data was fragmented across SCADA, LIMS and manual spreadsheets. Regulator submissions took days and confidence in the numbers varied by team. When the Environment Agency asked how a specific value was calculated, the answer took a week and pulled three people off delivery.
What we did
- Discovery workshops with operations, compliance and IT to agree the target reporting model and single set of KPI definitions.
- Built an Azure Data Factory + Databricks pipeline landing raw, cleansed and curated data (bronze/silver/gold) with idempotent transforms.
- Designed a governed Power BI semantic model with row-level security by asset area and endorsed as certified.
- Wired in freshness checks, Great Expectations tests, alerts, and an end-to-end lineage view in Purview for audit.
Results
- Regulatory reporting time cut from 3 days to under 5 minutes.
